” vectorfield architects (Spatial Art Institute) of Yamagata: Grounded in Hometown, Consecutive Five-Year Winner of the Good Design Award – Representative Yano Committed to Work Originating from Yamagata”
The architectural design office “vectorfield architects (Spatial Art Institute)” (located in Yamagata City, led by representative Hidehiro Yano) has been awarded the “Good Design Award”, which evaluates designs across various fields, for five consecutive years starting in 2019. The recognized projects include the office in the city, an animal hospital, and the revitalization of the historic Goten-zeki Canal, with this year’s award going to a community facility in China. Representative Yano (56), who honed his skills under the world-famous architect Tadao Ando (82), expresses his desire to continue working from his local Yamagata to reach the national and global stage.
Yano, born in Yamagata City, graduated from the University of Tokyo’s Department of Architecture and mentored under Ando. He gained extensive experience at Ando’s office in Osaka, including international projects, and established his own firm in Yamagata City in 2015. His ambition to work on creating environments, not limited to architecture, is encapsulated in the concept of “spatial art.”
Two of the five awards are related to the Tax Accountants’ Hall located in Hatagomachi 1-chome (completed in 2017). In 2020, the award was for architectural design, and in the following year, for the landscape design of the surrounding Goten-zeki Canal. In architectural design, the intention was to highlight the Goten-zeki Canal, which was not very noticeable between neighboring houses, by creating a plaza along the waterway.
After the completion of the building, the Yamagata city initiated a landscape design project in tune with Yano’s vision. Yano took charge of the overall supervision, and the previously concrete-lined canal was paved with pebbles, resulting in a waterside plaza created through public-private collaboration.
Yano places great importance on “dialogue” with various parties, including clients, the surrounding environment, and the history and culture of the land. He also serves as a specially appointed associate professor for the tourism and town planning course at Tohoku University of Community Service and Science (Sakata City), maintaining dialogue with students who will shape the future. “Both the inland and the Shonai (coastal) area of Yamagata Prefecture retain layers of old buildings and townscapes. There are jobs that can only be done because they are based in Yamagata, not in a major city,” he says.
Yano holds a strong desire to do something for his hometown, similar to how Tadao Ando continues to work based in his birthplace, Osaka. “For my hometown and from my hometown, I wonder what I can do,” he reflects with conviction. (Makoto Akutsu)
