vectorfield architects(ベクターフィールド・アーキテクツ)

The name “空間芸術研究所( Spatial Art Institute)” was chosen to ensure that the original meaning of “Architecture” as the translation of “Architecture” would not be forgotten.

However, when we attempted to directly translate “空間芸術研究所( Spatial Art Institute)” into English, we realized that due to language and cultural differences, the intended meaning wouldn’t be conveyed effectively. As a result, we decided to create an English name that expressed our ambition to pioneer architecture in the new era in a different way.

“Vector field” is originally a term from mathematics and physics, representing the distribution of vectors (a concept similar to arrows, combining direction, orientation, and quantity) in geometric space. Imagine it as a collection of small arrows, as shown in the figure.

In “Architecture,” there are both visible and invisible elements. The visible elements can be associated with materials (building materials).

The invisible elements include factors such as circulation (representing the movement of people), airflow, forces within solid structures (stress), and heat transfer. Many of these invisible elements are represented as a collection of vectors, or a “vector field.”

Today, the consideration of these “invisible elements” in architecture is becoming increasingly important. For example, microclimates indoors and outdoors in housing, the flow of wind and heat in cities, and the countless trajectories of people are gaining more attention.

While discussing the “invisible elements,” it’s important to note that the “visible elements” are not disconnected from vector fields. To be perceived by humans, “light” serves as a medium. Light is characterized by both “particle” nature and “wave” nature, behaving as a vector field wave.

Ultimately, “Architecture” can be described as both an “art” and a “science” of the “vector field.”

With the intention to express something beyond “Architecture” as “空間芸術(Spatial Art)”,we created the neologism “vectorfield” and chose the English name “vectorfield architects.”

(Spatial Art Institute” and “vectorfield architects” may complement each other.

The inspiration for this concept came from an essay by a renowned mathematician with the same surname as mine, which I read before pursuing a career in architecture.
