仕事の内容と規模にもよりますが、基本的には全国、全世界どの場所でも対応可能です。
山形市に拠点を置いておりますが、特に仕事を近郊に求めたいと思っているわけではありません。
一昔前であれば都会と地方都市の情報の格差は埋めきれないほど大きなものでしたが、今は、インターネットや書籍の通販等の普及によりそれほど問題ではなくなったと思っています。
また、現在は図面は電子情報化されており、例えば、地方にいても都会の協力事務所や建設会社と、インターネットを介して迅速な情報交換が可能であり、必要であれば、施主とのテレビ会議も簡単に行うことができます。（このことは、日本各地だけでなく、世界各地をも、情報のやり取りという点では、瞬時に結びつけることができるということを意味します。）
もちろん、建築の仕事は敷地を読み解くことから始まり、現場に足を運ぶことも必要ではあります。しかし、考えてみればこれまでも、大都市にある設計事務所が遠隔地の地方で仕事を行うことは数多くの事例がありました。また、現代において建築家は、頼まれれば世界中のどこででもプロジェクトを行っています。代表の矢野も、大阪にある安藤忠雄建築研究所に常時在籍しながら、担当者として、日本各地はもとより、スリランカ、韓国などの外国にも適宜出張し、建物を竣工まで導いた経験をもっています。大阪が山形にかわっても、インターネットの環境さえあれば、同じように世界と交信しながら仕事ができると考えていますし、実際、そのように、遠方でのプロジェクトも進行中です。2022年には、私たちが設計した建物が中国安徽省に竣工しました。
目的がはっきりしており、そのための組織づくりをしっかりやれば、距離の問題は基本的には解決可能だということです。
都会と地方の仕事のあり方が非対称であったのは、過去の情報インフラなどの未整備と、都会の事務所に頼んだ方がよいものができるという固定観念によるものだと思います。
2020年以降のコロナ禍の状況の中で、都会に多くを依存しすぎることのリスクも明らかになり、創造的かつ文化的な仕事も地方から発信できるように、社会のあり方も変わっていかねばならないのではないでしょうか。
ただし、仕事の大きさと距離によっては、設計料と出張経費等がアンバランスになってしまうことも考えられますので、その点は個別に検討が必要なことだと思われます。

While our base is located in Yamagata City, we don’t specifically seek work only in the nearby areas.
In the past, there was a significant information gap between urban and rural areas. However, due to the widespread availability of the internet and services like online shopping for books, these issues have become less prominent. Additionally, architectural drawings have been digitized, which allows us to efficiently exchange information over the internet with cooperation offices and construction companies, even when working remotely from rural areas. Teleconferences with clients are easily conducted when needed. This means that, in terms of information exchange, we can connect not only within Japan but also with locations worldwide.
Of course, architectural work typically begins with site analysis and often requires site visits. However, historically, many architectural firms based in major cities have successfully worked on projects in remote rural areas. Architects today frequently undertake projects worldwide when requested. Our principal architect, Hidehiro Yano, is associated with Tadao Ando Architect & Associates in Osaka while handling projects in various locations within Japan, as well as in foreign countries like Sri Lanka and South Korea. Although he is not always present in Yamagata, as long as there is an internet connection, we believe that working with the world is just as possible as working locally. In fact, we are currently working on projects in remote locations. In 2022, a building we designed was completed in Anhui Province, China.
In this context, as long as the purpose is clear and the organizational structure is well-established, the issue of distance can essentially be resolved.
The asymmetry between urban and rural work practices in the past was due to underdeveloped information infrastructure and the fixed notion that it’s better to hire city-based offices. However, in light of the challenges and risks of overreliance on urban centers revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020, it’s important to reconsider the way society operates. This includes creating a more balanced relationship between urban and rural areas, allowing for greater flexibility and inclusivity in our working approaches.
Nevertheless, it’s important to consider that depending on the scale and location of the work, there may be a potential imbalance between design fees and travel expenses. Each project’s details, including the type of building, the location of the site, the total floor area, the budget, and the desired completion date, should be shared with us via phone, fax, email, or other means, so we can promptly provide a tailored response.
